Happy 3rd birthday to Beyond Her Curls!! It’s crazy to think three years ago I launched my blog and my little space on the internet is still going strong. Thank you for sticking around and enjoying the content I create. Blogging isn’t easy as many may think, but very enjoyable if you love what you do. A lot of time and effort is put into every blog post: it’s about shooting the content, editing, creating the blog post, promoting your post, posting on social media platforms, and all on your own. I will say I am blessed to have The Modalista as my photographer, she shoots almost all my outfits.
I’ve been blessed to have collaborated with some of my favorite brands this past year. Below you’ll find some of my favorite posts from a few past collaborations:
*C H E E R S* Here’s to more years of creating content and having you all around with me! 🙂 If there’s anything you’d loved to see on Beyond Her Curls, let me know!
Three things you need to think about before starting your blog
When I first started my blog, I knew nothing about blogging. I honestly did little-to-no research on “how to start a blog” just went in on my first blog post, eeeek. Throughout the process, I did learn a few things and below are the three things I wish I had known before starting my blog.
Finding your niche
Know what you want to blog about and stick to it. When I launched my blog, I knew I wanted to focus on the things I loved and felt comfortable talking about: fashion, decor, hair, and DIYs. In the beginning, I did post about all these things but quickly realized my viewers were more interested in just curly hair and fashion. As much as I loved DIY projects then (I wish I still had time for them) and decor, it’s not something that was bringing traffic to my blog. Ask yourself: Will my blog be a fashion blog? A beauty blog? A lifestyle blog? and stick to categories that fall under those fields. You can combine 🙂 I’d say my blog focuses on fashion and beauty!
Investing in a good camera and lens
You don’t have to get a DSLR camera to have a blog but if you are going to use a phone, I do recommend an iPhone 7Plus. I use the depth of field feature on my phone for a lot of my pictures and it works just fine. Some of the pictures in this post are actually on my iPhone. Starting out, I did have a professional camera but not the right lens. Since I wanted the blurred background effect I needed a fixed lens (50mm 1.8 is what I use now). Here is why – look at this post compared to this post. See how the background is not blurred out in my first fashion post ever? compared to now? Just be sure to do your research. A fashion blogger may use a different lens as someone who focuses more on lifestyle post, ya know?
Having a name for your blog + platforms
When I finally came up with the name, Beyond Her Curls, I made sure that name was available throughout all social media platforms that I was going to use. Having everything match makes it easier for your audience to find you no matter which platform they stumble upon.
Thank you for joining me on this journey! I cannot wait to see what is to come! ♥
