Just when I thought my hair looked its best after diffusing it, I was so wrong! I have fallen in love with my second and third day curls, learning the hard way, of course. The volume I get on second and third day curls is amazing; my hair is even more bouncy. Ever since I started my hair journey, second day hair never worked for me. I just looked like an even bigger lion with frizz shouting its name, tangles everywhere, and hair tie lines everywhere…I, my curl friends, was a h-o-t mess. I would wash my hair every-single-morning to get my hair looking its best (with no frizz). What I didn’t know was that to achieve nice second day curls you needed to protect your hair before bed. It all begins the moment you place that lovely hair of yours on your pillow and zzzz z z z z…. If you just tie your hair up and go to sleep, chances are you’ll wake up with second day frizz. #AintNobodyGotTimeForThat Unlike some ladies, I was not blessed with the type of hair that I can just put in a pineapple bun and roll into bed; I’m stuck with a longer process, but that’s ok because the results are amazing.
So this is what I do:
Once I get home, I wrap my hair up in a satin scarf. I prefer this just because one, a bun will mess up my curls if tied up and two, I know my curls are safe, away from getting in contact with anything that may cause frizz (i.e. sweater I may be wearing + me touching my hair).
Before going to bed, I apply any desired products in my hair to get that more bouncy, fuller look I want to achieve.
Step One. You want to start by spraying cold water onto your whole head, flip your hair over as well, get it all in there girl! You also want to focus on any frizzy sections you may have currently and spray directly on those strands/sections.

Step Two. Apply your desired styling product. For second day hair I apply the Curl Enhancing Smoothie by Shea Moisture. I do not section my hair since I already have products in my hair and just want to define any sections that may need extra help. Once I apply the product, I then use a microfiber towel to scrunch my hair as it soaks up any excess water in my hair. *Note: your hair shouldn’t be dripping wet*
Step Three. Lastly, apply Jane Carter’s, Natural Twist Out Foam. I LOVE this stuff. The twist out foam is like a mousse except without hardening your hair or leaving the hair flaky when dried. This gives my hair LIFE the second day & third and still very manageable.
Once, you’ve completed all three steps; wrap your hair in a satin scarf. You want to be sure you place all your hair on top of your head prior to wrapping the hair (I don’t recommend tying the hair). As you sleep, your hair will be drying and defining those curls again – leaving you with even more volume the second and third day. The next morning all you have to do is take your hair out, shake it, and viola! Good luck…
Have a wonderful curly hair day!
