It’s no secret that to have healthy curls, you must deep condition! If this isn’t part of your hair care regimen, girl bye! Whether your hair is at its healthiest state or extremely damaged, it’s important to use treatments that will restore, strengthen or moisturize the hair. Deep conditioning helps restore dry brittle hair, color-treated hair, and adds moisture and shine to the hair. So get to it, sis!
How do you know which deep conditioner is right for your hair? I get it, with the overwhelming amount of hair products in the hair care aisles, it’s very easy to pick any treatment you’ve seen your favorite Instagram curly girl use in her latest post. Unless they state “this treatment is for _____ hair”, see if it’s something your curls actually need. You can also #FindYourShea using this product selector to help you discover which product is best for you, and pick up your favorites at Walmart! There is also a mobile rebate offer once you find your perfect product!

–THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF DEEP CONDITIONERS–
Deep conditioners like SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque are perfect when your hair feels dry and looks frizzy. A lot of the times, this means your hair is lacking moisture. Simply apply this to clean wet hair and leave it in for at least 20 minutes. If you have time, steam your hair so you get an even deeper treatment into the hair shaft. Whenever I choose not to steam, I’ll wear my hair in a protective style, run my errands and then rinse it out. Either works for me.
For all my curly gals who have color treated hair like me, I cannot stress enough how important it is that you use a deep conditioner at least once a week. It’s ideal to apply a deep treatment on every wash day if you don’t want your highlights to look extra dry.
Protein treatments are perfect for those who have just started their curly hair journeys or are transitioning and have brittle hair that’s prone to breakage. Now, this one is a little tricky. I do not suggest using a protein treatment too often, once a month or every 6 weeks will do the job. Overdoing it can actually dry your hair out, and we don’t want that now.
Look for keywords like strengthening or restore when looking for a protein treatment. This one is my fav from SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil line, Strengthen and Restore Treatment Masque. After washing my hair, I’ll apply this and comb my hair so I know it’s evenly distributed throughout my hair. I leave it in no more than 30 minutes. Rinse out and voilà!
girl, you see the wonders of deep conditioning? For bomb results, be SURE to rinse with cold water to lock in all that goodness aka moisture!
Let me know which SheaMoisture treatments you’re loving, I’d love to try some new ones!
